OTTAWA, ON – June 20, 2019 —

Pflag Canada – a national charitable LGBTQ2S support, resource and advocacy organization – endorses the release of the Health of LGBTQ2S Communities in Canada report by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health.

The report is based off of a study conducted between 28 February, 2019  and 9 May, 2019 by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health. During this study, the Committee heard from 33 witnesses and received 44 briefs. Several leaders and representatives of Pflag Canada Chapters were invited to present to the Committee and contributed towards the study.

The report includes 23 recommendations for the consideration of the House of Commons or the Government. Recommendations include the development and implementation of a national awareness campaign on sexual and gender diversity and a call for the Government of Canada to work with the provinces and territories to ensure uniform coverage across Canada for gender affirming surgeries and other medical care for trans people.

“The landscape of our LGBTQ2S communities and families is evolving as are their needs and requirements.” Says Pflag Canada President, Bev Belanger. “By consulting with members of the community, the Government has recognized their need to be heard. We applaud the recommendations provided by this report and truly see it as a progressive step towards the right direction.”

The report concludes by recognizing that members of the LGBTQ2S community know best how to improve their health and that they should be included in all related decision-making.
