Celebrating 20 Years as a Charitable Organization: A Legacy of Support and Advocacy
January 27, 2025

As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of pflag Canada becoming a national registered charitable organization, we reflect on our rich history and reaffirm our commitment to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

From our grassroots beginnings in the 1970s with Parents Of Gays (POG) in Toronto, and Parents and Friends of Gays (PFOG) in Vancouver in 1981 pflag Canada has been there to help. In 2003, most pflag groups united to form a national organization that could speak with one voice. pflag Canada was consolidated as a national corporation and registered as a charitable organization in January, marking significant milestones in our journey. Over the past 20 years as a charitable organization, we’ve grown into a national network of over 70 chapters across nine provinces, providing peer support, education, and advocacy for countless individuals and families.

Our mission has always been to create a Canada that affirms, respects, and values all sexualities, genders, and gender expressions. In today’s climate, where 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals continue to face discrimination and challenges to our identities and livelihoods, our work is more critical than ever. pflag Canada remains a beacon of hope and support, ensuring no one has to navigate their journey alone.

This year, we’re not just celebrating our past — we’re looking toward the future.

Over the coming months, we will roll out a series of events and opportunities to celebrate this milestone across the country. From community gatherings to national campaigns, we invite you to join us in honoring the progress we’ve made together and in building an even stronger foundation for the future. Stay tuned to this space for announcements and ways to get involved as we bring communities together to celebrate, reflect, and take action.

Together, let’s ensure that every person, no matter their identity, feels seen, valued, and supported.

pflag Canada. Family for all.
