May 17 marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia — known globally as IDAHOBIT. pflag Canada is proud to join voices around the world in calling for safety, inclusion, and dignity for 2SLGBTQIA+ people everywhere.

IDAHOBIT isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that discrimination still affects too many of our loved ones — in schools, in healthcare, in the workplace, and even within families. And it’s a call to action: to show up, speak out, and stand together.

What is IDAHOBIT?

IDAHOBIT is observed every year on May 17, commemorating the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Since then, the date has become a global moment to raise awareness about the harms of homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, while celebrating the resilience and diversity of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

In Canada, this day offers a powerful opportunity to reflect on progress — and recommit to the work still ahead. Across the country, pflag Canada Chapters will be marking IDAHOBIT in their own ways: from flag raisings and community events to educational campaigns and moments of remembrance. Together, we’ll show that love, inclusion, and solidarity are stronger than hate.
